Jan. 8, 2004 Toomey Blasts Specter for Dishonest Statements on Saddam Death Penalty “Specter’s claim that he ‘always has been for the death penalty’ is completely dishonest” ALLENTOWN—Republican
Senatorial candidate Congressman Pat Toomey blasted liberal incumbent
Senator Arlen Specter today for his dishonest characterization that he
“always has been for the death penalty” for Saddam. “Senator
Specter’s dishonesty has hit a new low – he denied opposing the
death penalty for Saddam Hussein even when confronted with his own
quotes,” said Toomey spokesman Joe Sterns. Last
month, Specter told several sources (documentation below) that he
preferred that Saddam be tried by an international court and that he be
kept alive rather than given the death penalty. His position
directly opposed that of President Bush. But yesterday, Specter
told the Associated Press that he has “always” been for the death
penalty for Saddam. Specter, incredibly, maintained his position
even when his own quotes were read back to him from the stories
published last month. “Arlen
Specter will say or do anything to try to get re-elected – even going
so far as to dishonestly deny his own statements. Saddam was a
ruthless dictator who has been captured and Congressman Toomey has
consistently and clearly advocated the death penalty for the many
atrocities he committed,” Sterns said. Specter’s dishonest quotes were responding to Toomey’s latest television ad, which goes up statewide today. The ad draws clear contrasts between Toomey and Specter on several issues including the death penalty for the former Iraqi dictator. Specter
has “always” been for the death penalty for Saddam? The Doylestown Intelligencer, December 18, 2003 Specter
speaks out on Saddam “Breaking ranks with both President George W. Bush and his own record of supporting the death penalty, Specter said Wednesday that he sees reason to keep the dictator alive. Saddam's trial is expected to bring out the human rights violations and war crimes from his quarter-century reign. ‘If he's in jail for a long period of
time, he'd be a constant reminder,’ to the world, said Specter. ‘We
have a societal interest in exposing him.’" Times
Herald (Norristown, PA), December 20, 2003 From
Iraq to Norristown Margaret
Gibbons, Times Herald Staff “Fallen
Iraqi tyrant Saddam Hussein should not be executed for atrocities
committed under his reign, according to U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter.
"I
think that Hussein being imprisoned for decades would be very salutary
for minor tyrants,’ said Specter, the former Philadelphia district
attorney who normally favors the death penalty for "heinous
criminals and outrageous crimes." "I
think society's best interests are served by keeping him on
display," said Specter.” Delaware
County Times, December 19, 2003 Gil
Spencer, Times Columnist “U.S.
Sen. Arlen Specter appeared on The Big Talker Wednesday night to explain
why Saddam Hussein should be tried by an international court at the
Hague, instead of a court made up of Iraqi judges, prosecutors and
defense attorneys. Specter
supports life in prison for Saddam “Just a day after US troops captured former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein, Sen. Arlen Specter (R) said Monday that he shouldn't be executed for his crimes.”
